Seed paper is different to that of standard machine made paper. It’s handmade from recycled content and embedded with seeds. Each sheet is unique and beautifully textured with slight variations in color, thickness and the placement of seeds.

Printing and trimming of seed paper can present some challenges! The design of your artwork can effect pricing, print quality and seed germination.

IMPACT OF ARTWORK DESIGN ON PRICING

Ink Coverage

Ink coverage refers to how much ink is required to print your design.

Ideally up to about half of the page (or less) should be covered in ink.

This allows for better seed germination and costs a lot less then if printing with high levels of ink. All our pricing is based on artwork that requires less then 50% ink coverage. A visual assessment of your artwork is best for determining the ink quantity along with a few basic question:

  • Is the page mostly covered in ink?
  • Does your design feature a full colored background?
  • Does the artwork contain large blocks of solid colors?
  • Does my artwork contain photographs?

If answering yes to these questions, your artwork will probably require high levels of ink. While we can print with high ink levels it's important to consider that when saturating the paper with ink, seed germination may be reduced.

If printing on both sides of the paper, only one side can have high ink coverage. The reverse side must have very low ink requirements

Printing to the edges

We try to keep prices as low as possible with product pricing often based around the amount of cards we can get from a printed sheet of seed paper. Keeping your artwork design clear of any edges allows us to use the paper more efficiently. We fit more products to a sheet of seed paper and paper waste is minimized. If your design prints to the edge (even just one edge!) a bleed must be added to the artwork.

What is a bleed?

A bleed is extra area that is added to the edges of the artwork. Any part of the artwork that prints to an edge must extend into the bleed area.

For example:

  • if the size of a square card is 100mm x 100mm, adding a 3mm bleed will increase the size to 106mm x 106mm.

Why is a bleed required?

Cutting precisely on a line isn't always 100% accurate. This is especially relevant to seed paper which can move slightly more than regular machine made paper when printing and cutting.

  • Without a bleed, after cutting to size there will be small white lines next to the edges and this really doesn't look great.
  • Extending your artwork into the bleed area allows us to cut off the extra 3mm which results in a much nicer cut.

Does printing to the edge increase prices?

Unfortunately yes. Printing with a bleed means we have to set up artwork differently. The added 3mm bleed reduces the quantity of products we can fit to each sheet of printed paper. This increases the price per product as extra seed paper is required, cutting and printing time (we print one sheet at a time!) is longer and more waste is created.

In summary, consider ink coverage and edge to edge print requirements when designing your artwork to optimize product pricing.

DESIGNING YOUR ARTWORK

Along with ink coverage and printing to the edges it's also important to consider the general design elements of your artwork to ensure they print well on seed paper. This may include:

  • text size and font styles
  • images
  • colour matching
  • plus more...

Please see our ARTWORK page for more details.

Setting up your custom artwork

Supplying correctly setup artwork allows us to proceed to print production relatively quickly. Please consider the following points when preparing your artwork to avoid any production delays.

  • Artwork dimensions – the page size must be correct.
  • Do not add any crop marks – we will add these when setting up to print.
  • Ensure any important details (names – if already added, other text, logo, images, qr codes etc) are 5mm clear of the trimmed edges.
  • If printing on both sides, variable data can only be included on ONE side. The artwork for the other side must be the same for all cards.

Please ensure you have read our Event Stationery page if adding names to your cards.

More specific information to ensure your design will print properly on seed paper can be found on our Artwork and Print Settings page.

FAQs

As this is a custom printed card, planting instructions are not automatically added.

We normally suggest including instructions within your own artwork design.

However, if selecting double sided printing, you may choose to use one of our standard planting instructions on the back instead of your own artwork. There are two versions to choose from, these can be viewed and selected in the options for back layout.

We have recently started printing names in two print runs.

The first print run should include the bulk of your names. This should be supplied at least 3 business days before we need to post your cards.

The second (and final) print run is for any late registered additional names. This is for up to around 20 names and can be supplied the day before we are due to post your cards. These names should be supplied in a separate excel file with ONLY the extra names.

If the artwork allows, we will often add a few blank cards as a complimentary extra.

However, if you require a specific quantity of blank cards, this should be included in your ordered amount. After all names have been supplied and printed, we will print any remaining cards as blanks to fulfil the total quantity ordered.

Yes, however we may need you to provide the font file if we don't already have it.

No. We haven't been able to source a sustainable option but are looking into it!
