DESIGNING YOUR ARTWORK

When preparing your design, please take a moment to read our artwork guidelines. They’ll help ensure your artwork prints beautifully on the seed paper and keeps your order moving smoothly through production.

It’s also important to consider the general design elements of your artwork to ensure they print well on seed paper, including:

  • text size and font choices
  • image quality
  • colour matching
  • overall layout and spacing

For more detailed guidance, please see our ARTWORK page.

If You’re Designing in Canva

Canva is a great tool for simple designs, but there are a few things to keep in mind to make sure your artwork prints correctly on seed paper.

1. Check your dimensions carefully
Canva’s preset sizes are often not the exact finished size needed for printing.
Please double‑check that your design matches the required dimensions including the 3 mm bleed. Incorrect sizing can cause trimming issues or require your artwork to be rebuilt.

2. Remove any unwanted background colours
Canva sometimes adds a very light background colour by default — even when it looks white on screen.
These faint backgrounds will print, and will be considered high ink coverage.
Make sure your background is set to true white (#FFFFFF) if you want a clean, unprinted surface.

3. Be mindful of image quality
Images pulled from Canva’s library or uploaded from the web can sometimes be low‑resolution.
For the best results, use high‑quality images and graphics so they print clearly on the textured surface.

4. We’re not Canva specialists
We’ll always do our best to help, but we’re not experts in editing Canva files.
Some Canva elements can’t be adjusted, exported cleanly, or separated for print setup.
If a file can’t be corrected on our end, we may ask you to update the design in Canva before we proceed.

5. Exporting your file
When your design is ready, please export it as a PDF Print with:

  • Crop marks off (unless your file is already set up at the correct size with bleed)
  • Bleed turned on
  • Flattened PDF if Canva gives the option

What is ink coverage?

Ink coverage refers to how much of your design is filled with printed colour. For seed paper, we recommend keeping ink coverage to 50% or less. Lower coverage supports healthy seed germination, preserves the natural texture of the paper, and produces cleaner, more consistent print results. It’s also more economical than printing heavy, saturated designs.
All our standard pricing is based on artwork that requires low to medium ink coverage (under 50%).

How do I determine ink coverage?

A simple visual check is usually the best guide. Ask yourself:

  • Is most of the page covered in ink?
  • Does my design use a full‑colour background?
  • Are there large blocks of solid colour?
  • Does the artwork include photographs?

If you answer yes to any of these, your artwork likely requires high ink coverage. We can print high‑coverage designs, but it’s important to note that saturating the paper with ink may reduce seed germination.

Printing on both sides

If you’re printing double‑sided, only one side can have high ink coverage. The reverse side must remain very low coverage to allow for better seed viability and print quality.

Printing to the Edge (Full Bleed)
When your artwork runs right to the final cut edge, it’s considered printing to the edge.
If even one side reaches the edge, your file must include a 3 mm bleed.

What is a Bleed?
A 3 mm bleed is a small area of extra artwork added around the outside of your design. It won’t appear on the final printed piece — it’s there so we can trim your cards neatly without leaving unintended white edges.

Think of it like this:
Trim size: 100 mm × 100 mm
Bleed added: +3 mm on each side
Final artwork size: 106 mm × 106 mm

How to set it up:

  • Add 3 mm on all sides of your document or canvas — e.g. an A6 (105 mm × 148 mm) card becomes 111 × 154 mm including bleed.
  • Extend any background colours, illustrations, or textures right to the outer edge of the bleed.
  • Keep important elements — text, logos, planting instructions — inside a safe margin (5 mm) so they don’t get too close to the trim line.

Crop Marks
Crop marks are helpful, but they should only be added when your artwork is supplied at the correct finished size, including the 3 mm bleed. If the file is oversized or undersized, crop marks should not be added - we will add them.

Why a Bleed Matters
Seed paper has a natural texture and can shift slightly during printing, front‑to‑back alignment, and trimming.
Adding a 3 mm bleed gives us a small buffer so your final cards have clean, even edges and your artwork reaches the edge exactly as intended.

Please see our ARTWORK page for more details.

What happens after you place your order?

Once we receive your artwork, we’ll run a test print to make sure it looks great on the seed paper. We’ll share this with you, along with any recommendations we feel will improve print quality or seed performance.
Timeline: Test print ready in 1–3 business days.

If changes are needed, you’ll be able to update your artwork and send the revised file back to us. Please note that artwork adjustments can extend fulfilment times, as there’s often a little back‑and‑forth during this stage.
Timeline: Artwork revisions usually take 1–3 days, depending on the number of tweaks.

We’ll only begin the full print run once you’ve approved the final test print, ensuring everything is exactly as you want it.
Timeline: Production takes 2–4 business days after approval.

If our production queue allows, we’re often able to speed things up, just let us know if you’re working to a tight timeline.

Delivery Timeframes

Once your order has been despatched, delivery times are:

  • Express Post: usually 1–3 business days
  • Standard Post: usually 3–5 business days

Please note that choosing Express Post speeds up the delivery time only — it does not fast‑track the production or artwork stages.

Examples of LOW & HIGH INK COVERAGE

Less than 50% of the card covered

Low Ink Coverage

  • No Printing to the edges
  • All artwork 5mm clear of trimmed edge

Less than 50% of the card covered

Low Ink Coverage

  • No Printing to the edges
  • Artwork is not 5mm clear of trimmed edges, so will need to be adjusted to allow for this. (As shown in image 1)

Less than 50% of the card covered

Low Ink Coverage

  • Printing to the edges, will require a bleed & crop marks to be added to artwork
  • Important information 5mm inside

More than 50% of the card is covered

High Ink Coverage

  • No printing to edges
  • All artwork at least 5mm clear of edge (red line)

Note due to handmade nature of the paper, the background/border may not always align evenly. As paper can shift 1-3mm when printing

More than 50% of the card is covered

High Ink Coverage

  • Printing to all edges, thus requiring a bleed & crop marks added
  • Important text details are at least 5mm inside the edges (red line)

Note : If you have High Ink Coverage on one side, we can't print High Ink Coverage side on the second side. As this will decrease the germination rate of the seeds.

As this is a custom printed card, planting instructions are not automatically added.

We normally suggest including instructions within your own artwork design.

However, if selecting double sided printing, you may choose to use one of our standard planting instructions on the back instead of your own artwork. There are two versions to choose from, these can be viewed and selected in the options for back layout.
